Introducing Engineering to Teachers
Experience is often the greatest teacher -- demanding real-time learning, it at one time both captivates imagination and expands horizons. Guided by a skilled instructor these lessons learned can be a powerful introduction to new concepts and ideas that inspire a passion that lasts a lifetime. When given to a teacher this impact is increased, influencing generations to come. More than a lesson learned -- it has become an investment in the future.
At a time when engineering needs are historically high, student enrollment in engineering programs is at an all-time low. International competition is raising the bar on this already demanding discipline. However, meeting the need to prepare and encourage students for engineering goes beyond important to critical, and speaks to our very way of life. It is to this end that the SWEET program has been developed -- to inspire the teachers that shape the minds of the next generation.Summer at WSU Engineering Experiences for Teachers (SWEET)
Summer at WSU Engineering Experiences for Teachers (SWEET) is a real-life introduction to the highly sophisticated world of engineering research. High school and middle school teachers are invited to participate in an intensive six-week course that takes them inside the world of the chemical and biochemical engineering laboratory.
This innovative course combines lecture and lab time and is customized to meet the interest of the participant. Observing ongoing research, participants choose an area of interest, such as lazar/light cancer treatments and partner with WSU faculty to develop a classroom friendly teaching module for their students. These modules are then made available, free of charge to any teacher interested.
